The 100th Anniversary of the Eagle Scout Award

Greetings Scouts and Scouters!

You know, BSA just celebrated 100 years of Scouting back in 2010… and what a celebration! BUT, did you know that we celebrate another special Centennial this year!? That’s right! The Eagle Scout Award didn’t start when Scouting did. It was first introduced in the Handbook for Boys in 1911 and it was awarded for the FIRST TIME in April of 1912 to Arthur Eldred, a 16 year-old, of Troop 1, Oceanside, NY. (read more about the history here).

Here in the Northeast Georgia Council, a boy named Douglas Flanigen was the first to be awarded the Eagle Scout badge in 1935. Here is a partial picture of a bigger display that celebrates his accomplishment and is hung in the lobby of the Council Service Center –

The Etowah District was formed from parts of the old Mountain and Chattahoochee Districts in 2002 and Eagle Scouts then, as now, usually come in fours because that’s the number of Eagle Boards of Review that we can do in any one month. So the big honor of FIRST for our District actually goes to FOUR boys: Jason Cook of Troop 39, Stephen Pearson Troop 39, Scott Schneider of Troop 39, and James E. Statham of Troop 39. All of these boys had completed and passed their respective Boards of Review on January 22, 2002. And here we are 10 years later celebrating!!! WOW!

Now, EAGLE SCOUTS… here’s a pretty cool opportunity: For those of you who were awarded the Eagle Scout badge in 2011, The Northeast Georgia Council hosts an annual banquet each year, usually in May. You should have already received an invitation, but I REALLY wanted to tell you the news about our special banquet this year, and that is: The key note speaker for this year’s event will be none other than NASCAR Legend, Bill Elliott. This is sure to be an AWESOME event for the Eagle Class of 2011. Be sure to reserve your spot or call the Service Center to speak with Martha Ann today! 1-800-699-8806. Eagle Scouts of the 2011 Class are FREE, but you have to RSVP SOON! This event is by invitation only, and it will fill up!
